3 Common Treatment Options for TMJ Disorder

If you’re suffering from TMJ disorder, you know all too well the pain and discomfort associated with this condition. Chronic headaches, sore jaw muscles, teeth grinding and clenching—all these and more can make daily life a painful struggle. Thankfully, there are ways you can effectively manage these symptoms with personalized and minimally invasive treatment.

Three common treatments for TMJ disorder include mouthguards, BOTOX®, and Invisalign®. Each can provide a much-needed relief from TMJ symptoms and help you live a more comfortable life. No matter how your TMJ disorder originated, one or a combination of these treatments may be just what you need.

Mouthguard

A mouthguard used for TMJ treatment has multiple purposes. It’s made from an incredibly strong plastic material that can withstand the force of teeth grinding and clenching. Custom-made, the mouthguard creates a level surface so teeth come together harmoniously. This allows the jaw to rest and reposition into a more natural position to relieve pain in the joints and muscles.

BOTOX

Botox has historically been a facial rejuvenation treatment that removes fine lines and wrinkles. However, the temporary muscle paralysis characteristic of a Botox injection is beneficial for TMJ symptoms. Botox helps reduce conscious or unconscious movements of the facial muscles and relieves jaw and joint tension. Botox TMJ treatment has also been effective at removing headaches due to TMJ disorder or teeth grinding and clenching.

Invisalign

A more recent treatment option, Invisalign has become a popular choice for reducing TMJ symptoms. In cases where TMJ disorder results from misaligned teeth, Invisalign can be used to correct the bite. More balanced teeth that come together properly reduce grinding and clenching (not related to stress) and relieve any tension or strain on the joints and facial muscles.
