Are you interested in improving the cosmetic appearance of your smile? Or do you have multiple teeth that no longer function properly due to disease or decay? Most likely, you’ve already started researching your treatment options and discovered two similar terms: smile makeover and full mouth reconstruction.

Dentists seem to use them interchangeably, but is there a difference? The answer is yes, and one treatment will be more suited to your situation than the other. A simple way to remember each treatment is that cosmetic smile makeovers you elect to have while full mouth reconstruction you need for proper oral health and function.

Smile Makeover

A smile makeover is a combination of cosmetic dentistry treatments you choose to receive to improve the natural appearance of your teeth. Patients who elect to undergo a smile makeover have generally healthy teeth and gums, but their smile may be hindered by discoloration, small chips or cracks, crookedness, or gaps. Common treatments include teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, dental bonding, and braces or Invisalign®. A smile makeover restores natural symmetry to the smile with teeth that are properly sized, shaped, and proportioned. Often, a smile makeover improves the appearance of the “aesthetic zone”, or only the teeth that show when you smile.

Full Mouth Reconstruction

A full mouth reconstruction is often a recommended series of treatments designed to restore the health and function of most or all teeth. While this treatment ultimately results in an aesthetic smile, the goal is primarily functional. This treatment addresses teeth damaged by decay or fractures, severe grinding and clenching or worn-down teeth, gum disease, and missing teeth. Common treatments include dental crowns and bridges, root canals, dental implants, and gum disease therapy. Patients who undergo full mouth reconstruction will experience an improvement in their dental function, oral health, and overall smile aesthetics.
